Federal online gaming legislation opposed by NCSL

background: \ffffff;

In America, the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) bi-partisan non-governmental organisation has penned a letter in opposition to ongoing federal efforts to legalise online poker.

Established in 1975 to serve state legislature members and staff, the NCSL provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on issues and advocate for states? rights in the American federal system.

Hawaii State Senator Carol Fukunaga and Alabama Representative Greg Wren, Co-Chairpersons for the NCSL?s Communications, Financial Services and Interstate Commerce Committee, authored an open letter calling for the legalisation of online poker to be handled at a state level and addressed it to Democratic and Republican members of both the House of Representatives and Senate.

?The NCSL believes the federal government should respect the Justice Department ruling and would oppose any efforts by Congress to preempt state authority over Internet gaming,? read the letter.

?We ask Congress to respect the sovereignty of states and to not consider any legislation that would overturn the Department of Justice?s ruling or to consider any legislation that would regulate gambling at the federal level.

?States have long been able to choose whether or not other forms of gambling should be legal and have been very successful in its regulation. We also ask that the federal government respect the rights of states that choose to prohibit Internet gaming.?
