Mom Can Smile Even while Child with Special Needs Meltsdown.

Mount Diablo Unified Community Advisory Committee on Special Education: Mom Can Smile Even while Child with Special Needs Meltsdown.

Mom Can Smile Even while Child with Special Needs Meltsdown.

That is what happened this weekend. After a fun AiN Revive event we went home, ate a late dinner,?and told the kids it was time to get ready for bed. Ready for bed at our house means take a shower,?brush your teeth, say a prayer, and into bed depending on the time you may, or may not, read. Saturday?night, was a little different because for some reason we sent our oldest son into the shower before the?youngest. Maybe I should tell you now the youngest has Aspergers and is a little stuck in his routine and?the word little isn?t being forthright. He is very stuck in his ways.

Samsung seemingly confirms upcoming Galaxy S4 Mega

MADRID, May 20 (Reuters) - Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has spoken out in defence of his captain Iker Casillas and confirmed that the Real Madrid goalkeeper will be part of the world and European champions' squad at next month's Confederations Cup in Brazil. Casillas has been warming the bench at Real since returning from a broken hand after he fell out with coach Jose Mourinho but Del Bosque said he had faith in his captain, who turned 32 on Monday, and he would be travelling to the warm-up tournament for next year's World Cup. ...

Obama urged to make economy a bigger, bolder topic

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Five months into President Barack Obama's second term, allies and former top aides worry that his overarching goal of economic opportunity has been diminished, partly drowned out by controversies seized upon by Republicans in an effort to weaken him.

The former White House insiders, including longtime Obama adviser David Axelrod, say Obama needs to make his case anew for government's role in expanding education and innovation and to give, as Obama put it in one of his early seminal speeches, "every American a fighting chance in the 21st century."

Among their suggestions is that the president deliver a major address, perhaps at a commencement, that once again places his economic vision at the center of his agenda and speaks to what continues to be the overriding concern of the American public.

Instead, absent major legislative victories, Obama's second term has become a series of small actions overshadowed by a trio of recent troubles over the administration's response to the attack in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans, the IRS's targeting of conservative groups and the Justice Department's seizure of Associated Press phone records as part of a leak investigation.

"The hardest thing in the hot house of Washington in weeks like this is to get above the maelstrom and really define major issues in your own terms," Axelrod said. "They need to find big platforms, whether it's congressional addresses, commencement speeches, high-profile interviews or a combination of those things and others."

As these Democrats see it, there has been an arc of Obama addresses that have spelled out the challenge and the hope of attaining the American Dream, from a 2005 commencement address at tiny Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., to his speech in Osawatomie, Kan., in late 2011, and that the time for another one is now.

Over the last two weeks, Obama has been trying to draw attention to his job-creation ideas with small events in Austin and, on Friday, in Baltimore. The daytime visits have been coupled with modest executive initiatives that tend to garner local media attention but get lost in Washington's attention to the contentious issues of the moment.

"There does seem to be a risk of getting bogged down in noise," said Jared Bernstein, who was part of Obama's economic team when he served as Vice President Joe Biden's chief economist. "He doesn't need to get out to talk about Benghazi and the IRS and the budget deficit. He needs to talk about investment in the nation's productivity."

Obama has called for more government spending on education, public works projects, and research and development and has proposed paying for it largely with higher taxes. But after letting one tax increase on the rich pass at the beginning of the year, Republicans have steadfastly refused any further tax hikes and have resisted Obama's spending plans. The result has been a fruitless search, at least so far, for a "grand bargain" to trim the nation's long-term debt.

In the face of Republican-led investigations in Congress and with some conservatives even suggesting impeachment proceedings against the president, some Obama advisers say that boldly elevating the economy would create a sharp contrast and emphasize their belief that Republicans are overplaying their hand. They note that as dissatisfaction with Washington has grown, Obama has continued to hold a substantial edge over the Republicans in Congress.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said that creating jobs is the top priority of Republicans, too, but "we're also focused on holding this administration accountable" about what happened in Libya and with the IRS.

If Obama has a single long-term governing priority, it is a deep-seated belief that advances in technology and globalization have translated into a significant consumer benefits but have also eroded middle-class gains. "The result has been the emergence of what some call a 'winner take all' economy, in which a rising tide doesn't necessarily lift all boats," he wrote in his 2006 book, "The Audacity of Hope."

The opportunity to make a broad shift toward the economy might have presented itself this week, when the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office predicted that the budget deficit for 2013 will be $642 billion ? lower than estimated and half of the record $1.4 trillion hit during Obama's first year in office. Instead, that bit of news was overshadowed by the IRS, Benghazi and AP phone record controversies.

Armed with a lower deficit number, some of Obama's liberal critics say he should abandon efforts to reduce deficits and focus exclusively on jobs.

"They should declare victory," said Lawrence Mishel, president and CEO of the liberal Economic Policy Institute. "Making the big policy and political project the grand bargain has been digging us in a deeper and deeper hole."

White House officials say the time to pause and deliver the type of major address that connects Obama's policies to his core beliefs is when it has the possibility of making a major impact. For now, they say, their economic tour across the country is better suited to the moment.

"What we think that these tours do is add another dimension to the argument of what we're trying to get done with Congress," White House communications director Jennifer Palmieri said. "That this is not just about budgets, this is about steps that Congress can take legislatively and the president can take unilaterally that will create jobs and help middle-class families."

How to emphasize Obama's jobs agenda was a subject Thursday during a meeting between top White House aides and outside Democratic operatives, many of whom had worked for Bill Clinton's administration. They had been called by Obama chief of staff Denis McDonough to consult and offer ideas on how to respond to the most recent uproars. Among those attending were such Clinton aides as Paul Begala and Mike McCurry.

"What the president can do is make decisions about what he wants to talk to the American people about," said Democratic consultant Tad Devine, who also attended Thursday's meeting. "And my view is, as someone who spends time sitting in focus groups listening to voters, what's at the top of mind with them is the economy still."

Yahoo's Unwatchable Live Stream Proves Its Next Acquisition Should Be A Proper Video Platform

Screen shot 2013-05-20 at 2.25.17 PMIt's easy to forget that Yahoo has had a long, on-again-off-again love affair with online video. But you might not remember that, because other online video platforms long ago left Yahoo in the proverbial dust. Today, as Yahoo streamed its Flickr product and Tumblr acquisition announcements, we were given a demonstration of why Yahoo has been left in the dust -- and why it's had to turn to acquisitions for help in, well, nearly every department.

Coach K return to US team no longer ruled out

Mike Krzyzewski is no longer ruling out a return as coach of the U.S. Olympic men's basketball team.

Though the Duke coach had repeatedly said he wouldn't be back after last summer, USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo says they spoke about a week ago and there has been "movement" toward a return.

Krzyzewski told Sports Illustrated in a story Saturday that "there's a chance" he would lead the United States in 2016 for an attempt at a third gold medal.

Krzyzewski, 66, took over as U.S. coach in 2005. The Americans won a bronze medal in the 2006 world basketball championship and haven't lost a game since.

Even as Krzyzewski kept saying he was finished, Colangelo hoped he would reconsider. Colangelo wants a coach in place before the team holds a minicamp in July and believes there will be a decision soon.

The Americans' next tournament is the 2014 World Cup of Basketball in Spain.

The long and short of this players wanted ad is that I need role players who are dedicated to finishing any RP they become a part of. This RP has slowed to a dangerously slow crawl right now because of flaky and uncommitted players who promised me they'd be able to post consistently, but who ultimately lied to me about their ability and their commitment. I need players who will create a strong character and stick with them. I realize the RP's size, as well as the scope of the battle which the characters right now find themselves in, are both quite daunting. However, I need players who will not shy away from the challenges which the RP holds and who will be able to stick with it for as long as possible. As it stands, the players who made that promise to me ended up disappearing after about three weeks in the RP, if that.

So, if you are a strong and dedicated player who enjoys fantasy stories about Dragons and Dragon Riders, then please click the link at the top of the page to visit the RP's main page and see for yourself what you're getting into.

The RP itself takes place primarily on the continent of Da'lThrea. The continent itself is about 9,500 miles from east to west. To give some scale, the planet Earth is about 8,000 miles around at the equator. This continent is longer than the Earth is around by approximately 1,500 miles. Its tallest mountain is the Dragon's Crown which is over 4 miles in height where the Master of Dragon's Crown resides as he watches over the world below, and watches over the few Dragons which remain as they await the arrival of their Chosen who will become Dragon Riders.

Da'lThrea supports a number of varying humanoid species and is a medieval style fantasy RP where the gun has yet to be invented (and no, you will not be the one to invent it). The crossbow is the most complex weapon which exists in the RP, if you don't count the catapult, and the sword of the weapon of choice for almost all who take to the battlefield. However, all manner of weaponry and skill sets to match can be found within the world our characters inhabit. The combat and throwing knife/dagger, the bow and arrow, the sword and shield, bo staff and spear, poison tipped darts and needles, magic of all kinds... It's all here.

There is a very large selection of Dragons with which to choose from to begin your journey as a Dragon Rider. These Dragons range in size from human sized to the size of a small mountain, and are as varied in colors and shapes as they are in size. Some of them use ice attacks, some use fire. Some use telekinetic power, some avoid conflict all together. The Dragons of this RP are mysterious and highly endangered as a species. For several centuries now Dragon Riders have not existed, and the might of their order has been since forgotten to time by all except the Dragons which remain, and those who reside in the mountain cities in and around the Dragon's Crown.

There is also the option to design your own Dragon using any image you can find online as the basis for what it looks like and how it lives. Whether it uses an ice type breath or fire, whether its wings are scaly or feathered, whether it avoids or searches for combat, what color it is, how long its expected life span is... All of this is up to you if you so desire. There is a list of criteria which you must conform to when designing your Dragon, but it's very straightforward and easy to understand.

There are quite a few races which exist in the RP, and they are as follows:

Humans, Elves, Jumentai, Dwarves, Nymphs, Faeries, Merfolk, Avian, Demon, Angel, Necros, Necromancer, Centaur, Orc, Ogre and Dragon Spawn.

Because of the nature of the RP and the lore which I have designed for it, Necros, Necromancers, Centaur, Orcs and Ogres are not playable races. They exist solely as enemies, or in the case of the Centaur, a neutral race which will avoid contact with others if at all possible. There are several differences between my version of these creatures and races than what you may otherwise be familiar with, so I will explain for those who are confused as to why such a race as a Necromancer is considered only to be an enemy worthy feature of the RP.

Necromancers are undead sorcerers who can bring to life the undead to fight for them, and it doesn't matter which kind of undead we're talking about. If it can find the remains of a Dragon, it will lift its bones from beyond the grave if it means a powerful new servant. The Necromancers can live as long as the magic which revived them remains potent and active. If they manage to manipulate the magic which brought them to life with their own, they can live indefinitely unless they are destroyed outright. To this end, they are unplayable. Necros are basically a term used to define those which were brought back from the dead by a Necromancer, and thus they are unplayable. Centaurs cannot ride Dragons, so they're out. Orcs and Ogres are rather foul beasts by nature in this RP, and a proud creature such as a Dragon wouldn't even let one approach, let alone ride it.

Today in History

Today is Sunday, May 19, the 139th day of 2013. There are 226 days left in the year.

Today's Highlights in History:

On May 19, 1943, in his second wartime address to the U.S. Congress, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill pledged his country's full support in the fight against Japan. That same day, top U.S. and British officials meeting in Washington reached agreement on May 1, 1944 as the date for the D-Day invasion of France (the operation ended up being launched more than a month later).

On this date:

In 1536, Anne Boleyn, the second wife of England's King Henry VIII, was beheaded after being convicted of adultery.

In 1780, a mysterious darkness enveloped much of New England and part of Canada in the early afternoon.

In 1909, the Ballets Russes (Russian Ballets), under the direction of Sergei Diaghilev, debuted in Paris.

In 1913, California Gov. Hiram Johnson signed the Webb-Hartley Law prohibiting "aliens ineligible to citizenship" from owning farm land, a measure targeting Asian immigrants, particularly Japanese.

In 1921, Congress passed, and President Warren G. Harding signed, the Emergency Quota Act, which established national quotas for immigrants.

In 1935, T.E. Lawrence, also known as "Lawrence of Arabia," died in Dorset, England, six days after being injured in a motorcycle crash.

In 1962, actress Marilyn Monroe sang "Happy Birthday to You" to President John F. Kennedy during a Democratic fundraiser at New York's Madison Square Garden.

In 1964, the State Department disclosed that 40 hidden microphones had been found in the U.S. embassy in Moscow.

In 1973, Secretariat won the Preakness Stakes, the second of his Triple Crown victories.

In 1981, five British soldiers were killed by an Irish Republican Army landmine in County Armagh, Northern Ireland.

In 1993, the Clinton White House set off a political storm by abruptly firing the entire staff of its travel office; five of the seven staffers were later reinstated and assigned to other duties.

In 1994, former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis died in New York at age 64.

Ten years ago: WorldCom Inc. agreed to pay investors $500 million to settle civil fraud charges. The Supreme Court dealt a defeat to the drug industry, ruling 6-3 that a state (in this case, Maine) may try to force companies to lower prices on prescription medications for the poor and uninsured. A Palestinian woman blew herself up during a security check outside a mall, killing three Israelis in the fifth suicide bombing in 48 hours.

Five years ago: Chinese stood still and sirens wailed to mourn the country's nearly 70,000 earthquake victims. Democrat Barack Obama picked up the endorsement of Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia, less than a week after Hillary Rodham Clinton overwhelmingly won the state's primary. Jon Lester of the Boston Red Sox shut down Kansas City 7-0 for the first no-hitter of the season.

One year ago: President Barack Obama and other G-8 leaders held economic talks at Camp David, where they declared that their governments needed to both spark growth and cut debt. Chen Guangcheng (chehn gwahng-chung), a blind Chinese legal activist, was hurriedly taken from a hospital and put on a plane for the United States, closing a nearly monthlong diplomatic tussle that had tested U.S.-China relations. I'll Have Another overtook Bodemeister down the stretch to win the Preakness, two weeks after claiming the Kentucky Derby. (However, a tendon injury forced I'll Have Another into retirement on the eve of the Belmont Stakes.)

Today's Birthdays: PBS newscaster Jim Lehrer is 79. TV personality David Hartman is 78. Actor James Fox is 74. Actress Nancy Kwan is 74. Actor Peter Mayhew is 69. Rock singer-composer Pete Townshend (The Who) is 68. Concert pianist David Helfgott is 66. Rock singer-musician Dusty Hill (ZZ Top) is 64. Singer-actress Grace Jones is 61. Rock musician Phil Rudd (AC-DC) is 59. Actor Steven Ford is 57. Rock musician Iain Harvie (Del Amitri) is 51. Actress Polly Walker is 47. Actor Jason Gray-Stanford is 43. Rock singer Jenny Berggren (Ace of Base) is 41. Country/rock singer Shooter Jennings is 34. Actor Drew Fuller is 33. Christian rock musician Tim McTague is 30. (AP Photo/Paramount Pictures, Zade Rosenthal)

(AP) ? "Star Trek: Into Darkness" has warped its way to a $70.6 million domestic launch from Friday to Sunday, though it's not setting any light-speed records with a debut that's lower than the studio's expectations.

The latest voyage of the starship Enterprise fell short of its predecessor, 2009's "Star Trek," which opened with $75.2 million.

Since premiering Wednesday in huge-screen IMAX theaters and expanding Thursday to general cinemas, "Into Darkness" has pulled in $84.1 million, well below distributor Paramount's initial forecast of $100 million. The film added $40 million overseas, pushing its total to $80.5 million since it began rolling out internationally a week earlier.

The "Star Trek" sequel bumped "Iron Man 3" down to second place after two weekends on top. Robert Downey Jr.'s superhero saga took in $35.2 million domestically to lift its receipts to $337.1 million. Overseas, "Iron Man 3" added $40.2 million, raising its international total to $736.2 million and its worldwide tally to nearly $1.1 billion.

While "Iron Man 3" and "Into Darkness" did well overseas, they were outmatched by the debut of Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby," which followed its domestic debut a week earlier with a wide rollout internationally. "Gatsby" pulled in $42.1 million overseas, coming in a bit ahead of both "Iron Man 3" and "Into Darkness."

Domestically, "Gatsby" held up well at No. 3 with $23.4 million, lifting its total to $90.2 million.

In today's Hollywood of bigger, better sequels, follow-up films often outdo the box office of their predecessors, as each "Iron Man" sequel has done. While "Into Darkness" earned good reviews and is getting strong word-of-mouth from fans, the film did not quite measure up to the opening weekend of director J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" reboot from four years ago, at least domestically.

"'Star Trek' remains a fan-boy movie. It doesn't seem to have the same kind of cross-over appeal as say an 'Iron Man' or some of these others," said Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. "It's a very specific brand, but I think the general public would love this movie, because it's such an action movie. But to get a hundred-million-plus opening weekend, unless you're 'Twilight,' you really have to cross over to all audiences."

Paramount points out that overseas business is up in many markets, though, so worldwide, the sequel is off to a better start.

"Because of the nature of the franchise, because of how many movies have been made and the various forms of the TV shows, I'm not sure that 'Star Trek' goes by the rules of normal sequels. I think each movie stands on its own, because it's a unique franchise," said Don Harris, Paramount's head of distribution. "My goal was always that we grow the franchise. We're clearly seeing by today's numbers that the movie is being embraced on a worldwide basis in a way we've never seen before."

Harris said that domestically, "Into Darkness" finished its first weekend 6 percent ahead of revenues for 2009's "Star Trek," which got a head-start with $4 million in Thursday night previews to give it a $79.2 million haul through the first Sunday.

But "Into Darkness" had a full day of screenings Thursday plus its Wednesday IMAX business. Unlike the first movie, which played only in 2-D, the sequel also had the benefit of 3-D screenings that cost a few dollars more. Yet even with the 3-D upcharge and the earlier debut, it came away with just $4.9 million more than its predecessor through Sunday.

Still, it's a solid starting place for the movie to live long and prosper at theaters, with Paramount hoping "Into Darkness" can surpass the $385 million worldwide total of "Star Trek."

"I think we're well along on that road," Harris said.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Star Trek: Into Darkness," $70.6 million ($40 million international).

2. "Iron Man 3," $35.2 million ($40.2 million international).

3. "The Great Gatsby," $23.4 million ($42.1 million international)

4. "Pain & Gain," $3.1 million.

5. "The Croods," $2.75 million.

6. "42," $2.73 million.

7. "Oblivion," $2.2 million.

8. "Mud," $2.16 million.

9. "Peeples," $2.15 million.

10. "The Big Wedding," $1.1 million.

__

Estimated weekend ticket sales at international theaters (excluding the U.S. and Canada) for films distributed overseas by Hollywood studios, according to Rentrak:

1. "The Great Gatsby," $42.1 million.

2. "Iron Man 3," $40.2 million.

3. "Star Trek: Into Darkness," $40 million.

4. "Epic," $14.5 million.

Pakistan heads back to the polls, senior politician killed

A bloody campaign season in which about 150 people were killed nationwide ended with the death of Zara Shahid Hussain, a top politician in Pakistan's Tehrik-i-Insaf party. On Sunday, some constituencies accused of vote-rigging voted again. ?

An upmarket constituency of?Pakistan's violence-plagued city of?Karachi?voted again under tight security on Sunday, a day after gunmen killed a senior politician from a reformist party in the district and a week after general elections.

It was not immediately clear who killed?Zara Shahid Hussain, a leading member of the?Pakistan?Tehrik-i-Insaf?( PTI) party of former cricket star?Imran Khan.

Imran blamed the killing on the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) party, which has a stranglehold on the city. MQM leaders denied responsibility, condemned the killing and demanded a retraction from Imran.

The attack in the upscale Defence area, the family neighbourhood of assassinated former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, capped a bloody election campaign in which around 150 people were killed nationwide.

Last Saturday's elections handed a landslide victory to opposition leader?Nawaz Sharif?and his?Pakistan?Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

But results from a handful of constituencies across the country are still uncertain amid accusations of vote-rigging. There is re-polling in a few others where security issues prevented voting.

Last week's election gave the MQM 18 of 19 national assembly seats in?Karachi,?Pakistan's biggest city. The constituency, known blandly as NA-250, where Sunday's re-poll is taking place is thought to be a stronghold of the PTI.

The re-vote took place at 43 of 180 polling stations. The MQM, which wanted re-polling of the whole constituency, boycotted the vote.

Whatever the result, Sharif's national landslide win is assured. But as?Pakistan's financial centre,?Karachi?generates around half of government revenues and stability in the city is key to stability of the whole country.

For the first time, each ballot box was guarded by a ranger and a soldier inside and outside the booths to ensure security and no violence had been reported by early afternoon.

CONTROVERSIAL PARTY

Police said that two gunmen shot Hussain on Saturday outside her home in Defence.

"Her death has sent shockwaves across the rank and file of the party," Khan said in a statement.

"I hold (MQM leader)?Altaf Hussain?directly responsible for the murder as he openly threatened PTI workers and leaders through public broadcasts," Imran, recovering in hospital from a fall during campaigning, added in a tweet.

"I also hold the?British government?responsible as I had warned them about British citizen?Altaf Hussain?after his open threats."

Altaf Hussain?is accused of murder in?Pakistan?and leads his party remotely from exile in England. His party is designated a terrorist organization by?Canada, a charge it strongly denies.

Dawg gone! 'Idol' barely says goodbye to Randy

TV

REUTERS

Mariah Carey, Randy Jackson and Nicki Minaj.

Opinion: Anyone hoping for an extended ?American Idol? tribute to Randy Jackson on Thursday?s finale had to wait an awfully long time for a minimal payoff.

The man?s been a judge on the show for 12 years. He?s brought catchphrases such as ?In it to win it!? into our national database of clich?s. He?s dealt with cranky personalities and divas, and sat through every single terrible group performance during Hollywood weeks. Plus he wears loud clothing for every episode without complaints. Surely the least he deserved was a show-stopping send-off!

And he gave "Idol" every chance to make that happen. Like a man hinting that he wants his own surprise party, Randy announced his retirement from the show last week, giving producers ample time to throw something together.

?Idol? could have sent off their lone remaining original judge in style, much like the Simon Cowell appreciation tour that occurred when the acerbic judge departed after season nine. Plus, Mariah Carey was right there already. How hard would it have been to get a giant cake for her to burst out of?

No dice.

Instead, it wasn?t until almost 90 minutes into a two-hour show that Ryan Seacrest walked behind the judges? podium to say, ?Tonight is the end of an era. This evening we say thank you very much and goodbye to Randy Jackson.?

?The new age begins,? Mariah said helpfully.

The lights dropped. The tape rolled. And what did viewers get?

First, a brief bit involving dogs discussing the news in a board room. Get it? Because Randy calls everyone ?dawg?! Hilarious! But it's great to see that dogs can gather indoors for something other than a poker game.

Then a taped interview saw Randy note, ?If ?Idol? were around and was an opportunity for me growing up, I would have auditioned and won it five times.? It illustrated that after a dozen years, he still doesn?t have a firm grasp on the rules of the competition, or his own singing voice. (Randy, buddy, you?re a bass guitarist, not a front man.)

The wayback machine took the audience to Kelly Clarkson?s audition, and to footage of Randy, Simon and Paula Abdul when they were all much more natural looking and didn?t seem to be a creation of wardrobe and makeup. Long-term viewers sighed and remembered the good old days when the concept was fresh.

?Not in a trillion, billion years would this man ever make it to Hollywood,? Simon said.

(How great would it have been had that been followed by Randy saying, "Not in a trillion billion years can you make a different reality singing competition successful without me being a party of it as well?")

Also, did the show really have to use Daniel Powter?s ?Bad Day? as the musical accompaniment? For years, that was the song that ?Idol? losers heard upon their departure each week. If nothing else, didn?t Randy at least rate someone performing it live?

All too soon -- less than three minutes after it began -- the clip show ended, and the pink-jacketed Randy was taking his final bows.

?By the way, Randy, I think I speak on behalf on a lot of people in America and our producers when I say the door is always open, my brother,? Ryan said. And the show moved on.

That?s it? That?s all the man gets after a dozen years?

Hope Ryan is taking notice. He?ll clearly have to plan his own wrap party when the time comes.

Did Randy deserve a better send-off? Share your thoughts by clicking the "Talk about it" button below!

Gunmen raid home in Iraq, kill 5 people

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi authorities say gunmen have broken into the house of an anti-terrorism police officer in the southern suburbs of Baghdad, killing five people including him and his sleeping family.

Police officials say the attackers stormed the house in the al-Rasheed district early Saturday and shot dead Cap. Adnan Ibrahim, his wife and two children, aged eight and 10.

As they were leaving the area, the attackers killed another policeman who tried to stop them at a nearby checkpoint.

A health official confirmed the death toll. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to the media.

Insurgents in Iraq frequently target security force members in an attempt to undermine the Shiite-led government.

Wait Until You Hear Who the Turkish Prime Minister Reportedly Invited to Join His Entourage During U.S. Visit

Turkish Prime Minister Invited Father of Radical Islamist Killed in Gaza Flotilla to Join His Entourage on US VisitErdogan-Obama-Getty

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdo?an allegedly invited a special personal guest to accompany him on his visit to the U.S. this week.

According to Turkish media, the father of one of the radical Islamist activists killed in Israel's raid on the Mavi Marmara in 2010 (the Gaza flotilla) was included as an invited guest in the prime minister's delegation in the hopes he might be able to meet President Barack Obama.

Furkan Do?an, a 19-year-old with both Turkish and U.S. citizenship, joined the Gaza flotilla where he expressed his desire for "martyrdom." His father now wants the U.S. government to sue Israel over the raid in which the IDF says its forces were defending themselves from what appeared to them to be an organized attack launched by passengers armed with knives and metal bars as the commandos boarded the ship.

Today's Zaman reports:

Ahmet Do?an, who asked Erdo?an to deliver a letter to US President Barack Obama, joined Erdo?an's delegation upon a request by the Turkish prime minister.

Do?an said Erdo?an told him: "I can give this letter [to him], but it is better if you give the letter to him yourself. I will include you among the members of the official delegation." Do?an also said the prime minister told him he should meet with Obama if they can arrange an appointment with him. The victim's father said he described Furkan and wrote about his son's life in the letter.

It's unknown if the father's letter was delivered to Obama or if he actually met the President during the trip. That the radical activist's father was with the prime minister's entourage was not addressed during the joint Obama-Erdo?an press conference Thursday or at the White House or State Department briefings of the past few days.

Furkan Do?an, along with eight Turkish activists, was killed in a battle with Israeli commandos who boarded the ship to enforce the naval blockade on Gaza, instituted after Palestinian terrorists were caught smuggling heavy weapons to the territory by ship.

Flotilla organizers claimed they were on a humanitarian mission, but an Israeli think tank reported that seven of the nine passengers killed had professed a desire to die as "martyrs" before the boat set sail to Gaza. Radical Muslim terrorists and their supporters often glorify the idea of martyrdom for Allah, achieved via jihad.

The Jerusalem Post cited the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center which reported a month after the raid that eight of the nine passengers killed were members of the IHH, a Turkish group that calls itself humanitarian but which the Israeli government along with some U.S. and European lawmakers characterize as radical Islamist in nature. The State Department has not included the IHH on its list of terrorist groups.

According to the Israeli think tank report, a Turkish newspaper printed this quote from 19-year-old Furqan Dogan's diary, in which he said he wanted to be a martyr, providing strong evidence his intentions were not peaceful: "These are the last hours before I join the sweet experience of being a shahid (martyr). Is there anything more beautiful than this?"

On his visit to Israel in March, President Obama convinced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to issue an apology to Turkey for the killing of the flotilla activists and to offer financial compensation for those killed. In exchange, Turkey was supposed to promise to drop any legal suits against the Israeli servicemen involved.

Ever since the apology, Turkey has appeared to backtrack on the deal personally brokered by Obama. Earlier this week, lawyers for the Turks killed filed a complaint against Israel at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. That venue is chosen when parties seek investigations of war crimes, genocide or crimes against humanity.

Officially, the suit was referred to the court by Comoros, a small African country in which the Mavi Marmara was registered. Michael Rubin of Commentary Magazine suggests Erdo?an wants "plausible deniability," that it's not the Turkish government filing the suit in defiance of Obama's request.

Rubin reveals that the law firm behind the ICC filing employs one principal who is "a long-time AKP party [Erdo?an's Justice and Development Party] activist and the other has been intimately involved in the IHH." Rubin writes:

Anyone who believes that Erdo?an seeks to bury that hatchet more than rub salt into the wounds of the last two years needs only to consider the special guest whom he has had join his delegation.[...]

It is actually quite amazing: Erdo?an has endorsed an Al Qaeda financier, embraced not only Hamas but the most militant faction within that terrorist organization, defended the Sudanese leader against charges of genocide, and has been the largest leak in multilateral efforts to sanction Iran. And yet, Obama will not only welcome him to the White House with the highest honors, but help fulfill the Turkish premier's blatant desire to use the White House as the backdrop to follow through on his pledge to bash Israel at every opportunity.

Erdo?an has already rejected a personal request from Secretary of State John Kerry to hold off on visiting the Gaza Strip. Positioned next to Obama, Erdo?an used the White House backdrop Thursday to announce the June timeframe for his trip to meet with Hamas leaders in Gaza, a group the U.S. defines as a terrorist organization.

At the press conference, Obama emphasized his strong relations with the Turkish leader. "This visit reflects the importance that the United States places on our relationship with our ally, Turkey, and I value so much the partnership that I've been able to develop with Prime Minister Erdogan," Obama said according to the White House transcript.

Just two days after Turkish citizens got the International Criminal Court to investigate a possible case against Israel, Obama took a moment to compliment Erdo?an for the steps he's taken to fulfill the arrangement Obama brokered between Israel and Turkey.

"Given our shared interest in peace, I want to note the Prime Minister's efforts to normalize relations with Israel," Obama said.

White? House Press Secretary Jay Carney said at his daily news briefing Tuesday, "Turkey is one of our strongest partners."

Besides meeting Obama, Erdo?an placed a foundation stone at a new Turkish-American cultural center in Maryland.

According to Hurriyet Daily News, Erdo?an said the center reflects the "alliance of civilizations."

"In a period marked by Islamophobia, this center will express the brotherhood showing how wrong [Islamophobia] is," he said.

X-ray tomography on a living frog embryo

Friday, May 17, 2013

Classical X-ray radiographs provide information about internal, absorptive structures of organisms such as bones. Alternatively, X-rays can also image soft tissues throughout early embryonic development of vertebrates. Related to this, a new X-ray method was presented recently in a Nature article published by a German-American-Russian research team led by KIT. For periods of about two hours, time-lapse sequences of cellular resolution were obtained of three dimensional reconstructions showing developing embryos of the African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis). Instead of the absorption of X-rays, the method is based on their diffraction (DOI: 10.1038/nature12116).

"X-ray diffraction enables high-resolution imaging of soft tissues," explains Ralf Hofmann, one author of the study and physicist at KIT. "In our work, we did not only manage to resolve individual cells and parts of their structure, but we could also analyze single cell migration as well as the movement of cellular networks."

Using X-ray diffraction, similar tissues can be distinguished by minute variations of their refractive index. However, in contrast to classical absorption imaging, this does not require any contrast agent, and X-ray dose is profoundly reduced. The method is of particular advantage when probing sensitive tissues in living organisms, such as frog embryos. In their study, the researchers concentrated on the motion and shape changes of tissues, cavities, and single cells during the developmental milestone of gastrulation.

During gastrulation, germ layers are formed and organized in their proper locations. Thereby, an initially simple spherical ball of a few hundred cells turns into a complex, multilayered organism with differentiated tissues eventually turning into the nervous system, muscles, and internal organs. Quoting the renowned developmental biologist Lewis Wolpert: "it is not birth, marriage, or death, but gastrulation that is the most important event in your life."

"Employing X-rays, we were able to watch joint and individual cell movements during gastrulation," zoologist Jubin Kashef points out who is a co-author and head of a young investigator group at KIT. For the first time, it was appreciated how cells interact with each other in a living embryo and how regions void of cells form and disappear. "It is like the migration of peoples. Stimulated by the migration of individual cell groups, other cells join in. They form functional cellular networks, which adjust to their changing environment. During migration, cells specialize to form progenitor tissues of future organs, e.g. the brain or skin."

"It is fascinating to have digital capabilities to observe and analyze these processes in an individual living frog embryo," Hofmann and Kashef emphasize. "In this way, fundamental results are obtained." The new method not only reveals morphological and dynamic aspects of embryonic development but also provides insights into their underlying molecular biology obtained by comparing the development of wildtype embryos and morphant phenotypes. The African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis) is one of the most important model systems of developmental biology whose study is of relevance in understanding human embryogenesis and diseases. In future research, morphant phenotypes will be correlated with the targeted switch-offs of key proteins. For this purpose, the novel technique -- combining latest X-ray measurement technology with advanced image analysis and developmental biology -- will be established at the synchrotron radiation facilities ANKA in Karlsruhe and APS in Chicago for routine use by a broad community of scientific users.

In their study, KIT researchers, which were supported by biologists from Northwestern University, used coherent X-rays from the Advanced Photon Source of Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago. Prior to this investigation, the method had been developed at ANKA. During measurement, a coherent bundle of X-rays passes the nearly spherical 1-mm frog embryo, which rotates half way around its axis within 18 seconds. By variation of the irradiation direction, information on the three-dimensional (3D) structure is acquired. As X-rays pass through different types of tissues at variable speeds, diffraction occurs. In turn, this generates a characteristic intensity distribution by interference a certain distance behind the embryo. Within the 18 s of tomographic scan time, about 1200 images were recorded. Similar to digital photography, every image consists of several million pixels. From this vast amount of data, the three-dimensional structure and the development of the embryo over time is inferred at micrometer resolution. If this process is repeated at intervals of several minutes, the resulting sequence of 3D images reveals all gastrulation movements occurring inside the embryo. Image reconstruction and analysis algorithms for the here-employed X-ray phase-contrast microtomography were developed at ANKA.

Immediate results of this research are the discovery of new morphological structures and the clarification of fluid redistribution processes. Moreover, the locations of centers driving the migration of tissues and cells during gastrulation were determined by differential flow analysis.

Panasonic Eluga P P-03E takes on Samsung with its own air gestures (video)

Panasonic Eluga P P03E centers on air gestures, says two can play Samsung's game

Don't think that the Galaxy S 4 has a lock on the concept of touch-free input. Panasonic has bolstered NTT DoCoMo's summer lineup with the Eluga P P-03E, a 4.7-inch Android phone whose one-handed interface can involve even less finger contact than Samsung's flagship. Its central Touch Assist feature lets owners unlock their phone, answer calls, preview content and enter text by hovering a digit just above the glass. The handset is no slouch outside of its signature trick, either -- it carries a 1080p LCD, a 1.7GHz Snapdragon 600 processor, 32GB of expandable storage and a sizable 2,600mAh battery. Japanese customers will have their chance at Panasonic's above-the-screen magic in late June, although we wouldn't count on the Eluga P reaching the US anytime soon.
