(AP) ? British actor-comedian Russell Brand is divorcing "California Gurls" songstress Katy Perry after 14 months of what had appeared to be one of Hollywood's happier marriages.

"Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage," Brand said in a statement to The Associated Press on Friday. "I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends."

Brand, 36, offered no other details, but in papers filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court, he cited irreconcilable differences.

He and the 27-year-old pop singer were married in October 2010 at a resort inside a tiger reserve in India, and their mutual affection had become a rather sweet feature of the celebrity circuit.

The couple announced their engagement in January 2010 after meeting at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, where Brand hosted and she performed.

The comedian, who once struggled with substance abuse and sex addiction, was effusive about his bride while promoting projects earlier this year, saying marrying Perry has "given me much more strength in what I do."

"For a long while, what I do professionally was all that mattered to me really," he said in March. "Now I think, well, whatever I do, I'll just go back to her, and that's incredibly comforting."

Perry praised her husband backstage at the 2011 VMAs in August, where she won three awards and he offered a tribute to Amy Winehouse.

"I'm proud of him, whatever comes out of his mouth, and sometimes it's very colorful, right?" Perry said of Brand. "That's why I married him, because he's smart and I learn a lot."

Attorneys for Perry, whose name is listed as Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson in the divorce papers, did not respond Friday to calls seeking comment.

The Internet had been abuzz recently with rumors about possible trouble for the couple after they were seen during the holidays without their wedding rings.

Perry's run of No. 1 singles earned her the distinction of becoming MTV's first artist of the year earlier this month. She hosted "Saturday Night Live" on Dec. 10 and gave no indication any marital woes.

Brand's recent film credits include "Arthur," ''Hop" and "Get Him to the Greek." He is among the ensemble starring alongside Tom Cruise in "Rock of Ages," set for release next year.

Both Brand and Perry were absent Friday from Twitter, where they often shared kind words for each other.

Mitt Romney: A Candidate's Rhetorical Evolution (Time.com)

There are two broad categories of campaign messages: Stories and lists. The list message is the easiest to pull off, and usually the least effective. Put the candidate on a stump, or before a camera, and rattle it off: Less taxes, more growth, less government, more healthcare, less deficit, bigger army, less crime, better education. You know the drill. All good things to all good people. The idea is that if voters listen long enough, they will surely hear what they want to hear. Find their pleasure point, get their vote.

The second kind of campaign message is a story. It has a beginning, a middle and an end. It has a hero and a villain. And it has a moral. The idea is less about hitting pleasure points, than raising hopes, channeling frustration and offering a promise. The list, of course, can make its way into the story, but the story cannot just be the list. It must be bigger. Epic. A fight between the past and the future. Good and evil. Prosperity and decline. (Watch TIME's video "Mark Halperin Interviews Mitt Romney.")

In 2008, Barack Obama mastered the story message, out-narrating the primary and then the general election, first against list-loving Hillary Clinton and then against a befuddled John McCain. The Obama story -- Hope! Change! Aspiration! -- became the very Obama brand. It was what people voted for.

In 2008, meanwhile, Mitt Romney mastered the list message. Just take a look at any of the old stump speeches from 2007 and early 2008, when Romney was still trying to become the Republican nominee by being all things to all people -- a "conservative's conservative," he said at the time, while also claiming to have worked well with Ted Kennedy. He had talking points on everything, health care, taxes, abortion, gays, education, Iraq, etc., and he always somehow squeezed them into a 25 minute address. For some of his list items, he even had PowerPoints, a.k.a. sublists. Romney offered his lists relentlessly. He didn't win. He didn't really even come close.

But this time, for the moment at least, everything has reversed. The new and improved Romney travels the country not with a list, but with a story. "This is an election not to replace a President but to save a vision of America. It's a choice between two destinies," he said a few weeks back in New Hampshire. "This will be a campaign about the soul of America, about American greatness. I'm confident that Americans won't settle for an excuse that 'it could be worse.' " In Romney's new story, he is a proven business wiz battling a liberal optimist in over his head. (Read "Mitt Romney: Mr. Plurality.")

If this arc sounds familiar, that's because it's just a few steps removed from Obama's winning 2008 story. It is about hope for an American future that seems to be slipping away. Just make some substitutions. Replace the war in Iraq with the economy. Replace health care reform with getting deficits under control. Replace the villain George W. Bush with the villain Barack Obama. And then tell the people that the country is in danger, and there is a bright shining hero, full of confidence and smarts, who is ready to save the day. Mitt Romney wants to be that guy. He will never inspire people the way Obama did. But he can at least make them believe he can get the job done.

The irony here, of course, is that for the moment, Barack Obama doesn't have a story to tell. As Romney points out, "could be worse" won't cut it. And the list of Obama's accomplishments -- repealing Don't Ask, Don't Tell; health care reform; Wall Street reform; student loan reform; green energy investment, etc. -- is not going to cut it either. Of course, the campaign is still young. Obama has plenty of time to lay out his storyline. If Romney is the nominee, it will no doubt posit him as the villain, a rich financier who benefited from a rigged game that rewards the puppet-masters while laying off workers. Obama will play the hero, fighting valiantly to protect the little guy against a rigged game dominated by Republican congressman and Wall Street henchman. It will posit two visions of the future: Obama's vision of rebuilding the country with investment, and a Republican vision of austerity that falls hardest on Main Street. The script has already been written by Obama's advisers in Chicago and at the White House.

But the difference in 2012 is that Obama's storyline will not stand alone. If Romney wins the nomination, the President will face a narrative far more potent than anything Obama's opponents came up with in 2007 and 2008.

Happy 33rd Birthday, Katie Holmes!

Katie Holmes turns 33 today.

It's difficult to believe the mother of Suri Cruise and the husband of Tom Cruise has been around as long as she has, but it's true. She looks great for 33!

Since marrying one of the planet's biggest movie stars, Kate's ironically kept a much lower profile, focusing on motherhood and family. Good for her.

Fortunately for us, she does still act now and then, and still makes the occasional public appearance, such as her recent visit to the Late Show (below):

So happy birthday, girl! You warmed our heart on Dawson's Creek, and we hope to see much more of you going forward, as a person and an actress.

Samsung takes aim at Apple with Australian Galaxy Tab ad, credits Cupertino for its popularity

Now that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been cleared for sale in Australia, Samsung is taking the opportunity to publicly celebrate its courtroom victory, at Apple's expense. Exhibit A: a local newspaper ad that flatly brands Sammy's slate as "the tablet Apple tried to stop." The spot, which ran in the Sun-Herald this week, came just a few days before Samsung Australia's mobile head openly credited Cupertino for making the Galaxy Tab a "household name." Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Samsung Australia's vice president of telecommunications, Tyler McGee, declined to say how much his company lost in sales revenue due to Apple's temporary injunction, but was more than willing to laud the iPad maker for inadvertently turning the spotlight on the Galaxy Tab. "At the end of the day the media awareness certainly made the Galaxy Tab 10.1 a household name compared to probably what it would've been based on the investment that we would've put into it from a marketing perspective," McGee explained. The exec went on to say that the manufacturer is bringing to market "as many units as we can," since it expects the device to be in "short supply against the demand." To the courtroom victor go to the spoils -- including, apparently, bragging rights.

Mark Kuban Welkomes Khloe and Lamar to Dallas; DASH, Rob Kardashian to Follow?

While Kobe Bryant laments the loss of a key Lakers teammate, both Lamar Odom and Khloe Kardashian are being welcomed enthusiastically by members of the Dallas Mavericks organization.

First, Mavs coach Rick Carlisle told the press that Khloe was his favorite Kardashian. Now, former Dancing with the Stars contestant/team owner Mark Cuban has come out and told Extra:

"She's welcome with open arms. We can't wait to have the whole family, can't wait to have Khloe and Lamar, we'll go from there."

Dallas Bound

And it sounds like the team will have more family members to welcome soon. Odom told Us Weekly that Rob Kardashian will soon join him and Khloe in Dallas, while various sources report the Kardashians are psyched about the trade because it allows them to expand their DASH franchise to a new city.

We'll give NBA Finals MVP Dirk Nowitzki the final word on the trade for now:

"[Odom] can bring the ball up, he can shoot, he can post. He's a great decision-maker with the ball and one of the best passing big men in the league today. So, we should be able to have fun with each other."

Flying robots build a 20-foot-tall tower

The first installation to be built by flying machines opened its doors to the public Dec. 4. The installation, called "Flight Assembled Architecture", was conceived and built by teams led by Fabio Gramazio & Matthias Kohler as well as Raffaello D'Andrea at ETH Zurich.

By John Roach

Robotic quadrocopters ? that is flying machines with four rotors ? have built a 20-foot-tall tower of polystyrene blocks at a museum in France.

This may come as bad news for unemployed construction workers hoping for a bright future building next-generation skyscrapers, but it's yet another way robots are aiming to re-shape the global workforce.

In this case, an architect still draws up a blueprint for the building, but computers and robots do the rest ? interpreting the blueprint and controlling the crew of robotic copters, for example.?

The first public job for this system was the "Flight Assembled Architecture" exhibit at the FRAC Center Orleans,?billed as the "first installation to be built by flying machines."

The exhibit is the work of ETH Zurich roboticist Rafaello D'Andrea and architects Fabio Gramazio and Matthias Kohler.

Like any construction site, a safe operating environment is essential. To avoid collisions, the robots reserve air space on one of two "freeways" before they fly.?

"The system ensures that while a space is reserved, only the reserved flying vehicle has access ? all other vehicles must wait before flying through the space," the team explains in a media release.

This system also prevents collisions with the tower, since the tower itself is considered reserved airspace.

Each robot has a specially designed gripper to hold and place the bricks. The researchers also figured that quick flights are essential to prevent factors such as air turbulence resulting in a misplaced brick.

Perhaps the speed will also cut down on construction delays, giving the robotic workforce another edge over their human counterparts.

The tower on exhibit is 20 feet tall and made of 1,500 blocks. It's a model of a futuristic 2,000-foot tall "vertical village" that could house 30,000 people ? assuming 30,000 people want to live in a building assembled by robots.

Johansson: Marriage was 'best thing I ever did'

Scarlett Johansson doesn't regret her two-year marriage to Ryan Reynolds.

In fact, the actress told Cosmopolitan's January issue that saying "I do" to Reynolds was "the best thing I ever did."?

PHOTOS: Ryan and Scarlett in happier times

"I'm a big believer that when something feels right, you should do it," she told the magazine. "I'm a big believer in instinct. Getting married was the right thing to do because it was natural. It grew out of a romance and love and a desire to have a future with somebody, and I was very fortunate that I married somebody who turned out to be the person I thought he would be."

PHOTOS: Scarlett's ex-beaus

"The Avengers" star, 27, told Cosmopolitan she misses "having a partner and a confidant."

"Relationships are complicated," she mused. "Being married is a living, breathing process. I think I was not fully aware of the peaks and the valleys. I wasn't prepared to hunker down and do the work... Both of us were extremely busy. We spent so much time apart. It's very difficult."

PHOTOS: More sad celebrity splits

Since the couple's split in 2010, Reynolds, 35, has moved on with Blake Lively. Johansson had a five-month romance with Sean Penn, 51, that ended in June.

Can Hollywood risk-taker Graham King survive 'Hugo'? (omg!)

Producer Graham King holds his Oscar for best picture for the film "The Departed" backstage at the 79th Annual Academy Awards in Hollywood, California February 25, 2007. REUTERS/Mike Blake

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Graham King, one of Hollywood's most fearless figures, has taken his biggest risk yet as distributor of indie films and producer of big-budget projects.

But the results of his latest foray may leave him teetering on the financial edge.

"Hugo," GK Films' latest and most ambitious project to date, is struggling at the box office despite critical acclaim. Shot at a monumental cost of around $170 million, including $70 million from GK Films, it now appears to be the latest in a series of box-office duds including "The Rum Diary," released through King's FilmDistrict, and "London Boulevard."

This weekend "Hugo" took in just $7.6 million after opening to a disappointing $15.4 million over the Thanksgiving holiday. The whimsical 3D film by Martin Scorsese about a boy in Paris had a lower take despite increasing its domestic theater engagements by 523 locations to 1,840.

"He's a great risk-taker," said Stuart Ford, CEO of the film company IM Global. "He has taken creative risks throughout his career. He's taken financial risks. It's tough to bet against him."

But others see King's choices as out of step with what works in today's business environment.

"Graham has upscale tastes, which is to be admired. He's an old-fashioned moviemaker, but it's a big risk as a business when it's your own money," said a prominent producer who declined to be named. "Graham's big projects may topple the ship."

King declined to be interviewed for this article as did his business partner, Texas oil baron Timothy Headington. An executive with the company said that King hopes "Hugo" will build over the holidays like "The Aviator" did in its time and ultimately be a success.

But "The Aviator," which also won great critical acclaim and was directed by Scorsese, was not profitable. (King later produced "The Departed" with Scorsese, and won Best Picture at the Oscars.)

"Hugo" is the latest in a string of money-losing projects starring A-list talent.

Debuting in late-October, King's "The Rum Diary," which starred Johnny Depp, flopped, grossing just $20.8 million worldwide on a $45 million budget.

An individual close to King said that only marketing costs will create a loss on "Rum Diary" because of the pre-sold international rights to the film.

Released November 11, crime drama "London Boulevard" starring Colin Farrell and Keira Knightley has been a huge disaster. Released in two theaters by IFC, it took in only $10,484 but cost $28 million to make.

Earlier in the year, another Depp project, the animated "Rango" -- which GK Films produced but did not finance -- grossed a solid $123.3 million in the domestic market. But the quirky film's $121.9 million international performance was not big enough to render any significant profits once a production budget of $135 million and global prints and advertising costs were considered.

Last year's "The Tourist," starring Depp and Angelina Jolie, got by on the strength of its international box office. With a budget of $100 million, it grossed only $67.6 million domestically, but it took in $210.7 million abroad.

In fact, GK Films has had only one unquestioned box office hit since 2007, "The Town." That film, written and directed by Ben Affleck, grossed $92 million domestically and $144 million worldwide on a $37 million production budget. It was released by Warner Bros.

Now there's "Hugo," a Scorsese film based on the children's book "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" and named Best Picture by the National Board of Review last week.

The film needs to gross about $100 million domestically for King to recoup his investment. So far, it has grossed only $25.2 million.

The upcoming foreign release of "Hugo" will be crucial.

GK, like most independent film companies, mitigates its risk by selling films internationally before starting production. But when a company's movies perform badly overseas, it makes international distributors less likely to invest.

With "Hugo's" international release still to come, difficulties could lay ahead for GK Films, especially as, as an executive at another company noted, it's getting more difficult to pre-sell movies internationally for big sums.

Meanwhile FilmDistrict, the indie distributor that King launched last year, has had variable results. "Drive" was a success with $66 million worldwide at the box office, as was "Soul Surfer." But King recently pushed out distribution president Bob Berney in the wake of "Rum Diary's" disappointing performance.

The results put extra pressure on the company's upcoming films.

Two of them, "World War Z" and "Dark Shadows," boast star power: "World War Z" is a big-budget sci-fi movie starring Brad Pitt and directed by Marc Forster; "Dark Shadows" is a gothic horror film starring Depp and directed by Tim Burton.

Other films in the pipeline, such as the Bosnian war movie "In the Land of Blood and Honey" -- which is written, directed and produced by frequent GK collaborator Jolie -- appears to have dubious commercial potential.

King has been buoyed by his unique relationships with talent - Scorsese, Depp, Affleck and Jolie.

But his most important relationship is with Headington, the oilman whom Forbes lists as the 420th richest person in the world, with a fortune estimated at $2.7 billion.

"He's in the Johnny Depp business," a marketing executive told TheWrap. "And if you're in the Johnny Depp business, you can get people to give you large briefcases of cash. How long does that continue? Will 'Hugo' count against him?"

King is in the Scorsese business, too. The filmmaker is slated to direct Daniel Day Lewis and Benicio Del Toro in the company's "Silence," about two Jesuit priests who encounter persecution and violence in 17th century Japan.

To insiders, that too sounds like an ambitious, but old-fashioned project.

"I don't know how many cards he's really got in his deck, and I think the ones he keeps playing are running into some real limitations," a producer told TheWrap. "He keeps returning to the same players and for a while, that looked like an incredibly sexy hand. It's obviously now looking much less so."

Italy PM meets unions ahead of crisis plan approval (Reuters)

ROME (Reuters) ? Prime Minister Mario Monti met unions on Sunday to build support before the cabinet approves a 20-billion-euro package of austerity measures aimed at shoring up Italy's strained finances and stemming a crisis that threatens to overwhelm the euro zone.

Ministers are scheduled to sign off on the package of tax increases and spending cuts on Monday, though sources in the prime minister's office said the cabinet meeting may be brought forward to Sunday afternoon.

Expected measures include an increase in the retirement age for many workers, liberalization of professional services, a hike in income tax for higher income brackets and new taxes on private assets and housing.

The measures come at the start of one of the most crucial weeks since the creation of the single currency more than a decade ago with European leaders due to meet on Thursday in Brussels to try to agree a broader rescue plan for the bloc.

Italy, with a public debt of around 120 percent of gross domestic product, has been at the centre of Europe's debt crisis since yields on its 10-year bonds shot up to around 7 percent, similar to levels seen when countries such as Greece and Ireland were forced to seek a bailout.

Adoption of the package is seen as vital for re-establishing Italy's shattered credibility with financial markets after a series of unfulfilled promises by the previous centre-right government of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

Unions said the cuts will hit poorer workers and pensioners hard but there was broad political support for Monti's plan, which is expected to be approved in parliament before Christmas.

"The choice isn't between a light package and a tough package, it's between a tough package today and the risk of bankruptcy for the country tomorrow," Angelino Alfano, secretary of the centre-right PDL party told SkyTG24 television.

With Italy, the euro zone's third-largest economy, close to a debt emergency that would destroy Europe's financial defenses, EU leaders will meet in Brussels this week hoping to agree steps to bind the bloc more closely with tougher fiscal rules.

SEVERE

Sources present at discussions on the new fiscal measures said they would total around 20 billion euros ($27 billion).

An extra 4 billion euros would come from automatic cuts to tax breaks and welfare measures outlined but not clearly identified in the austerity package presented by the previous government.

Monti will have to balance the competing needs of showing budget rigor while not choking off growth, without which it will be impossible to reduce a 1.8-trillion-euro debt mountain.

About half of the overall package will be used to cut the budget deficit and help balance the budget by 2013 despite the economic downturn and rising borrowing costs.

The other half will free up resources to try to regenerate Italy's chronically stagnant economy, which is widely expected to go into recession next year.

Changes to pensions will be key in the new reform plan, with eligibility requirements toughened up for so-called seniority pensions which are based on a combination of workers' age and the years for which they have paid contributions.

Programmed cuts to the national health service budget are expected to be accelerated by one year, to reduce spending by 2.5 billion euros in 2012 and 5 billion euros from 2013, a local government source said.

A local housing tax (ICI) may also be reintroduced, bringing in estimated revenue of at least 3.5 billion euros per year, although this total could increase depending on possible adjustments to the assessment basis on which the tax is raised.

Other expected measures include further increases in value added tax rates and a ban on cash transactions above 500 euros in an effort to tackle tax evasion.

But the package will contain no reform of job contracts which hinder companies from laying off workers, a measure seen as key to overhauling the labor market but which is bitterly opposed by unions.

Hospitalized George Michael "improving" (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? British singer George Michael's health is improving, doctors treating him in Vienna for pneumonia said in a statement Wednesday.

The 48-year-old former Wham! frontman was Hospitalized in the Austrian capital and diagnosed with severe pneumonia, forcing him to cancel the remainder of his European tour.

"The latest development in Mr. Michael's case -- which has evolved from a severe pneumococcal infection -- necessitated intensive care due to its severity and extension," said professors Gottfried Locker and Christoph Zielinski.

"We are happy to announce that Mr. Michael is improving steadily with an impressive regression of pneumonic symptoms and follows a steady rate of improvement as hoped.

"As we said previously, complete rest and peace and quiet are mandatory."

The doctors also appeared to address speculation in the British tabloid press that Michael was suffering further, potentially serious health complications and that he was receiving state-of-the-art treatment during his stay at the Vienna General Hospital.

"There are no other health issues with regards to the patient other than the underlying pneumonic disorder, and no further measures had to be taken," they said.

"Michael is receiving precisely the same treatment as any ordinary patient in Austria would receive at the hospital for this disease."

The Grammy award-winning singer found fame in the 1980s with Wham! before going on to pursue a successful solo career. He has sold an estimated 100 million records and has a personal fortune estimated at 90 million pounds ($140 million).

More States Move Closer to Health Insurance Exchanges - Health ...

The Obama administration announced yesterday that a dozen more states have crossed the first big threshold in setting up health insurance exchanges ? including seven of the states that are suing the administration to overturn the health-care law passed last year.

Under the 2010 law, the state-run exchanges will be launched in 2014, opening a marketplace where private insurers compete to offer health plans to the uninsured and to small businesses. If a state hasn?t established a framework for the exchanges by 2013, the federal government will step in and run it.

Some 26 states have challenged the law on constitutional grounds, and the Supreme Court is expected to decide the matter by the end of June.

In the meantime, all but one state ? Alaska ? have taken federal money to plan their exchanges.

Yesterday, the administration said 12 states had reached the next stage and have qualified for additional money. Seven of the states ? Alabama, Arizona, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Michigan and Nebraska ? are part of the Supreme Court challenge. The others that reached the threshold are Delaware, Hawaii, New Mexico, Tennessee and Vermont.

Another 16 states reached this stage earlier in the year, including more who are participating in the challenge.

Republican governors have faced tough choices over how far they want to cooperate with a law they oppose.

The administration also said yesterday that states are eligible for grants even if they don?t expect to have their exchanges ready by 2014. That could be important next year if the Supreme Court upholds the exchanges, and if the 2012 elections favor Democrats for both the White House and state executive mansions.
