Boy with terminal illness helps feed the hungry

A 10-year-old boy battling a terminal illness in Colonie, N.Y., has used his upcoming birthday to help feed the hungry.

TimesUnion.com reports that NaSeaph Williams suffers from Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba syndrome. The rare genetic condition has weakened his muscles, heart and lungs. It has also left him unable to walk and prone to seizures. NaSeaph's mother told the paper that her son has never let his condition affect his generosity.

Laurel McAdoo, founder of Myles of Smyles, and Erin Musto, founder of Maddie's Mark, recently discovered the same thing. The duo, who the paper says both lost children to cancer in 2012, met NaSeaph at an event, learned of his amazing birthday wish, and quickly organized an early birthday party where, in accordance with NaSeaph's request, guests brought canned foods to donate to the needy.

McAdoo, whose Myles of Smyles provides support for families living in the Northeast who face serious health challenges, told the paper:

NaSeaph said he wanted to collect food for his birthday because he and his mother have received help from others. They had lived in a hotel where his hospital bed and game system were stolen, and the family got assistance to find the apartment where they now live.

Asked how he felt to see people bring the canned food he asked for, NaSeaph said, "I am happy."

The TimesUnion.com reports that NaSeaph's wishes for himself are to have a wheelchair-capable van, to be free from pain, and to meet New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and professional wrestler John Cena.

Mark Quandt, executive director of the regional food bank, told the paper: "Obviously he has been instilled with a real love and a real caring for others."

Blockbuster announced its entrance back into the video streaming game in January after pledging to exit that market late last year. Lindsay Lohan Enters Rehab At Betty Ford

Lindsay Lohan has avoided possible jail time as she has finally entered her court ordered rehad. It seemed like she was not going to make it. From the picture of a clearly stressed Lindsay sitting among a dozen or so suitcases and strewn about clothes, to changing rehab facilities, and then driving away from her second choice at the last minute, I was sure girlfriend was destined for jail. Lindsay was to attend a 90-day stint in a “lockdown” rehab center starting Thursday as an alternative to a three-month jail term for two misdemeanor convictions and a shoplifting probation violation. But the actress was not thrilled with the no smoking policy as she felt she would need to rely on it through treatment. She was then going to go to Morningside Recovery in Newport Beach but that was no approved for rehab. She cut it close as she had to be a in a treatment facility by Friday morning to avoid a warrant being placed for her arrest. But she pulled it off. Somehow at the last minute, she did it. Lindsay entered Betty Ford this morning after rehiring her old attorney, Shawn Holley. I hope this works for Lindsay [...]

Tactics of new Middle East virus suggest treating by altering lung cells' response to infection

Apr. 30, 2013 ? A new virus that causes severe breathing distress and kidney failure elicits a distinctive airway cell response to allow it to multiply. Scientists studying the Human Coronavirus-Erasmus Medical Center, which first appeared April 2012 in the Middle East, have discovered helpful details about its stronghold tactics.

Their findings predict that certain currently available compounds might treat the infection. These could act not by killing the virus directly but by keeping lung cells from being forced to create a hospitable environment for the virus to reproduce. The researchers caution that their lab and computer predictions would need to be tested to see if the drugs work clinically.

The results appear in the April 30 issue of mBio, the Journal of the American Society for Microbiology. University of Washington virologist Laurence Josset is lead author of the paper, "Cell host-response to infection with novel human coronavirus-Erasmus Medical Center predicts potential antivirals and important differences with SARS-coronavirus." She conducted the research in the laboratory of senior author Michael G. Katze, UW professor of microbiology noted for pioneering systems biology approaches to host and pathogen interactions.

Eleven of the 17 reported human coronavirus-Erasmus Medical Center cases worldwide were fatal. The virus is named for the Dutch hospital that identified the specimen from a Saudi Arabia patient. So far the illness has not easily passed person to person. The new disease agent belongs to the betacoronavirus family, as does the severe acute respiratory syndrome virus, SARS. Both viruses attack the lungs. The new virus, however, is more closely related to bat coronaviruses than to SARS. The two viruses latch onto different receptors to infect cells.

Josset, Katze and their team learned that, shortly after human coronavirus-Erasmus Medical Center enters lung cells, it, like the SARS virus, induces changes in how the cells' genes are regulated. But the newer virus does so sooner. Later, and throughout infection, the human coronavirus-EMC incites a massive sabotage -- much greater than that of the SARS virus -- of many genetic controls of protein production in lung cells grown in the laboratory.

"We found that a set of 207 genes in the lung cells was dysregulated early and permanently throughout infection with human coronavirus-EMC," Josset said. Various RNA levels were turned up or down. The new virus appears to specifically hamper the work of several genes that enable the body to sense the presence of viruses. The scientists believe such gene re-tuning by the virus could significantly lower the ability of lung cells to mount an appropriate antiviral reaction.

While SARS and coronavirus-Erasmus Medical Center activated a few similar lung cell responses for their own benefit, overall, not much overlap occurred. Each bad actor had its own modus operandi for interfering with lung cell gene activities.

"These differences in host gene-expression responses in the lab-grown lung cells," the researchers said, "might affect how each virus causes illness in an infected individual."

At present no proven treatment exists for human coronavirus-Erasmus Medical Center. Because the virus succeeds in multiplying by hijacking cellular processes initiated in response to infection, the scientists searched for drugs that might target these cellular responses, and in so doing stop the virus from reproducing. The researchers mentioned that this same approach is already being tested in influenza treatment. Drugs that reduce the body's excessive inflammatory reaction to the flu virus have therapeutic benefit.

The scientists obtained a rapid, comprehensive assessment of the new coronavirus's infective strategies by creating a global profile of how it disrupts gene transcription, the process by which DNA is copied into RNA for subsequent translation into proteins. They analyzed this extensive data with computer programs that predict which current drugs might be re-purposed to correct the body's virus-co-opted immune response.

The method could have widespread applications in fighting future dangerous viruses.

"Such an approach has the advantage of accelerating treatment availability, which could be crucial in case of an outbreak of an emerging pathogen," Josset said.

Katze concurred, "Laurence and others in our group are developing new computational approaches to efficiently exploit information about the gene expression profiles induced by existing drugs and small molecules. Our goal is to quickly identify drugs that can modify specific host responses to virus infection."

In the case of human coronavirus-Erasmus Medical Center, the approach yielded two promising possibilities. The analysis suggested that the early and sustained changes in lung cell gene regulation could be reverted by four types of kinase inhibitor and one kind of glucocorticoid. Additional studies are necessary, the researcher said, to determine the safety, effectiveness and required dosages of these drugs in treating human coronavirus-EMC.

What this study highlights, Josset said, is the advantages of fast, automated analysis of the transcriptome (all the messenger RNAs transcribed from the genome) of the infected cells.

"This method globally and efficiently characterizes the host response to emerging pathogens," Josset said. Data on the basic properties of a new virus and its interactions with host cells can usually be collected speedily. It takes, on average, between two weeks to a month after the virus has been identified and isolated.

The gene expression data obtained from the analysis of human coronavirus-Erasmus Medical Center infection, she said, was so robust that it "provides a plethora of data to mine for further understanding and ideas to test about the new virus."

"Because," she added, "host response profiles also can be used to quickly identify possible treatment strategies, we anticipate that generating such profiles will become a general strategy for rapid characterization of future emerging viruses."

Katze noted, "The emergence of new viruses, such as the H7N9 influenza virus in China, will continue to be a threat to public health. Devising new strategies to rapidly identify effective antiviral drugs is a high priority."

In addition to Josset and Katze, the other researchers on the project were Vineet D. Menachery, Lisa E. Gralinski, Sudhakar Agnihothram, Boyd L. Yount, Rachel L. Graham, and Ralph S. Baric, all of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Pavel Sova and Victoria S. Carter, both of the UW.

Financial Media Celebrates Apple's Tax Evasion Bond Deal ? naked ...

As is par for the course, the financial media is telling a story about a major US company from the perspective of the investing classes, rather than the broader public.

The poster child is the New York Times? Dealbook, in a story titled ?To Satisfy Its Investors, Cash-Rich Apple Borrows Money.? It third paragraph reads:

Apple?s return to the debt markets raises a riddle: Why would a company with so much cash even bother to issue debt?

A full seven paragraphs later, the article gets around to the last, and arguably the most important reason:

By raising cheap debt for the shareholder payout, Apple also avoids a potentially big tax hit. About two-thirds of Apple?s cash ? about $102 billion ? sits overseas in lower-tax jurisdictions. If it returned some of that cash to the United States to reward its investors, it could have significant tax consequences for the company. In some ways, the bond issue is a response to that tax situation.

?In some ways? is an understatement. A simple Google search shows stories going back several years of how Apple has been pushing for a tax holiday so it can repatriate its overseas stash. One example is a February 2011 report from electronista, Demands come despite federal budgetary crisis:

A variety of technology corporations are among those pressuring the US government to give them a preferential tax break, sources tell Fortune. Apple, Cisco, Pfizer and Duke Energy are specifically named as lobbying politicians for a tax ?holiday? in regards to repatriated cash. Whereas the companies would normally be obligated to pay 35 percent, their goal is allegedly to pay just 5 percent.

A 2012 story from United Republic focuses on Apple:

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Apple spent $2.3 million on lobbying last year and its lobbying expenditures have been steadily increasing over the past decade ? in 2000, it only spent $360,000 on lobbying.

A big chunk of this is spent lobbying on tax policy, especially repatriation legislation, which would let firms bring profits held overseas back to the United States at a cheaper tax rate. One bill in particular, the Freedom to Invest Act of 2011, would save companies like Apple, Google, and Cisco $78.7 billion, paid for by the American people.

This so-called tax holiday would let multinationals with more than $1 billion held abroad bring that cash back to the United States at a 5.25 percent tax rate, instead of the typical 35 percent top corporate rate. The idea is that those companies would pump that money into the American economy, especially through hiring workers.

Apple currently keeps about two-thirds of its $97.6 billion in profits abroad.

Bloomberg reported last fall that Apple and other companies have employed an army of over 160 lobbyists to persuade Congress to pass the Freedom to Invest Act of 2011. And these weren?t any old lobbyists. Sixty of them once worked for a sitting member of the House or Senate. And one in particular, Jeffrey Forbes, was once chief of staff to Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.). Baucus is the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, which has direct jurisdiction over tax law.

This sort of chummy influence-peddling on behalf of the Freedom to Invest Act isn?t supporting good policy. How do we know that? Because Congress already passed legislation exactly like it, back in 2004. And as a recent Senate report found, it didn?t go so well:

A report from the Senate?s Governmental Affair?s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations found that a 2004 tax break that was given to corporations repatriating profits made in foreign countries ?did not produce any of the promised benefits of new jobs or increased research expenditures to spur economic growth.? In fact, the report found that the corporations receiving the break cut 20,000 net jobs and cost the U.S. Treasury $3.3 billion in lost revenue over 10 years.

At least in the UK, where the UK Uncut movement against corporate tax avoidance has staged some large protests, the officialdom has managed to get some of the big foreign tax avoiders to pony up some dough out of embarrassment. But big offender Apple is not among them. As the Telegraph noted last December, in Apple shelters almost $1bn a week from US tax man:

Technology giant Apple shuttled $11bn (?7bn) into offshore tax havens in the fourth quarter of 2012, an analysis of its corporate filings has revealed.

The iPad maker has slashed its tax bill by paying less than 2pc on its overseas profits, as it moves money through offshoots in low-tax countries such as the British Virgin Islands?.

Prime Minister David Cameron last week told tax-avoiding companies to ?wake up and smell the coffee?, comments which drew threats from Starbucks? UK managing director of suspending millions of pounds of investment in Britain.

Starbucks took an unprecedented step of pledging to pay ?20m corporation tax in the UK, after it came under fire for paying nothing last year despite making sales of ?398m.

s-CORPORATE-TAX-RATES-large300Oh, and spare us any blather about ?taxing corporations is unfair because those poor investors would be taxed twice.? Everyone is taxed multiple times, so stop running the con that investors deserve to be a protected class. Workers pay FICA and income taxes, so sales tax payments come out of income that has been previously taxed. You also pay the real estate taxes of store owners when you buy goods or eat out. You pay the gas taxes on the shipping costs of products you buy online (again out of your after tax dollars!)

And let?s also not forget that growth rates were higher when corporations were more heavily taxed, dispelling the notion that making corporations pay their fair share is a negative for the economy.

But thanks to the tender ministrations of the Fed, which is goosing asset prices right and left in a futile effort to pump of the economy, Apple has a cheap and easy way out of the fact that its clever tax avoidance leaves its monster cache largely overseas, where it can?t buy the good will of increasingly jaded US investors. Its $17 billion of bond offerings Tuesday were a blowout. And that?s despite the fact that they didn?t garner an AAA rating. That view may as much reflect rating agency doubts that Apple will ever get the tax breaks it wants to bring its dough into the US on the cheap as well as concerns about how long the Cupertino company can keep its cachet and the premium margins that result.

But let?s not look too hard under that hood. What?s good for corporate icons has to be good for America, right?
